In DIY EV conversions it is often not feasible to design a sandwich battery box with heat exchange only at the bottom like in the Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.4 and many other OEMs. So individual chill plates per module is often the best way forward. This allows you to stack modules and still cool or heat them.

The downside is that fluid connections and high voltage connections will be in one box. So please ensure it is 100% leak free and regularly pressure test your cooling system. You can also consider using non conductive coolant just to be 100% sure.

This chill plate has been developed specifically for the Volkwagen MEB battery module and has a thickness of 5,75 mm and weights less than 1 kilogram.

The plates have a G1/4″ connection for the incoming and outgoing connection so you can insert a connection type you prefer. For example an angle swivel fitting G 1/4″-8x6mm, nickel-plated brass.

Due to the non-flat nature of the backside of the cooling plate it is recommended to use one plate per module. Furthermore it is needed to add appropriate spacers.

To ensure optimal heat exchange between the chill plate and the battery module a thermal transfer pad (thickness 1 mm) is needed and available as an option.

Note! These plates are not fully flat and have a bit of a rough surface. This is the result of the way they are manufactured. They are stamped and welded with a special technique rather than milled from aluminum and then got a cover on top. In my view this will work out fine when using the thermal transfer pads and when mounting them.
The way to do that is to create 4 ’standoffs’ that are level and then put the plate onto it. Then spacers to ensure the module is pressed onto the cooling plate / thermal transfer pad with slight but not too much pressure. This will flatten them. Do not tighten the modules down to the bottom of your battery box using the cooling plate as the spacer. This will damage the plate.
