GRNbms battery management system kit

Description

GRNbms (short for Green BMS) is an initiative from Pro-LOX and has been developed from the ground up. We’ve been involved from the very beginning. While at EVcreate our main focus is EV conversions and automotive, we do see opportunities in using secondlife batteries for energy storage and energy trade. This is where GRNbms comes in.

Supporting re-using the Volkswagen MEB platform has been the first target of GRNbms. Later support for other CAN driven cell monitoring units (CMU’s) such as the BMW i3 / i8 will be added.

Basic features are included in the firmware and some can be added / activated by buying extensions. Further details will be added to the product description soon.

Supported Cell Monitoring Units (CMUs) :

• Volkswagen MEB 12S CMU full control and balancing, from 1-32 modules
• Volkswagen MEB 8S CMU full control and balancing, from 4-36 modules

To be able to use the battery to power a load such as your house or even connect it to the grid, an inverter is needed. Traditionally low voltage setups were used. Therefore initially the Victron inverters are supported. Soon other low voltage inverters and high voltage inverters will be added as they are currently in Beta testing.

For the GRNbms the following options are available:

• 8s Volkswagen 4-port CMU (0z1915140D, used). If you order multiple CMU’s (max. 3), then we’ll supply ones that can be used together in one CAN-BUS network.
• 4-pack 8s cell tap cables (used), 50/50 with brown and blue connector to match CMU.
• Pre-programmed TFT touchscreen with fixed cable (new)
• CAN cable with 3 connectors for connecting up to three CMU’s (used)
• Busbar kit (3 busbars) with eight bolts (used)

GRNbms is considered to be and sold as a kit. It requires end user assembly and implementation. Of course it comes with a manual and additional support is available at a fee. Also comes with matching din rail holder and plug in connectors. See photo 2 for an assembled example.
